COMMUNITY CARE

Commumry care is the provision of care scmces and social support for people living in the community, usually their own home.

The term 1 community care' is used to describe a range of services provided for people in need who continue to live in the community. Usually this means that the person remains in their own home, but sometimes they live in a house or flat shared by others who have similar needs, rhc objective of providing such services is to enable a person to connnue to live in surroundings rather than in an institution such as a hospital or residential home. The services most commonly associated with community care are personalized services such as meals on wheels and assistance with bathing, but they also include those provided nearby and outside the home, such as at Day Care centres Other services linked to community care arc those that enable a person to develop social, leisure and educational interest. Still other services focus on the needs of carcrc. such as arranging for the cared-for person to spend a few- days in residential care so that the carer has time for themselves.

The term 'community care' w*as first introduced in 1960s to describe the policy of relocating people from psychiatric hospitals into less institutionalized surroundings; it is now used in relation to ail adult clients of social services, such as people with learning disabilities and older people In this sense the term is now used very loosely to describe any policy or service designed to help people stay out of institutional care, including residential homes and hospitals.
